The adsorption of 1-(2-cyanoethyl)-pyrrolidine (CEP) and 1-(3-aminopro
pyl)-pyrrolidine (APP) was studied at a smooth platinum electrode in 0
.1 M KOH. It was found that these organic compounds are adsorbed by ru
pture of the multiple bond in the nitrile group (CEP) or by dehydrogen
ation (APP), and that an irreversibly chemisorbed material is formed w
hich blocks part of the electrode surface. It was shown that the oxida
tion and reduction of CEP and APP from the bulk does not involve a ste
p in which strongly chemisorbed material is formed. The species produc
ed by CEP and APP adsorption on platinum cannot be hydrogenated, and t
heir oxidation is difficult; the oxidation potentials of these species
are higher than 2.5 V
