The formation of insoluble compounds on zinc in 0.15 M H2SO4 was shown
by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to be possible. Anodic current-vo
ltage curves were obtained for three kinds of zinc surface: polycrysta
lline with a mechanically worked surface, electrochemically deposited,
and the (0001) single-crystal basal plane. The experimental data obta
ined were well described by a model of two-step charge transfer with s
urface diffusion of ions of intermediate valency.
