The cathodic processes occurring in slightly acidic solutions of ceriu
m(III), neodymium(III), and dysprosium (III) salts were studied potent
iodynamically with linear potential scans at platinwn and quiescent me
rcury electrodes; these processes are attended by the reduction of wat
er molecules coordinated with the metal ions named. The results obtain
ed are in harmony with the suggestion that three electrons are transfe
rred to each triply charged lanthanide ion while the corresponding tri
hydroxy complex is formed. The Tafel slopes b(c)underbar obtained are
evidence for slow transfer of the first electron.
