A methodology for the selection of electrolyte systems for lithium bat
teries was suggested which uses three parameters when assessing the in
fluence of composition and properties of these systems: stability of t
he lithium electrode, physicochemical properties of the solutions, and
the efficiency of cathode operation. The utility of the approach, whi
ch is linked to the comprehensive nature of the investigations, is ill
ustrated with the development of an electrolyte system for batteries o
f the Li/SOCl2 type.
