Infection with Salmonella is most frequently manifested by infection o
f the gastrointestinal tract, causing gastroenteritis. However, certai
n subspecies of Salmonella, specifically Salmonella choleraesuis, appe
ar more likely to invade the intestinal wall and enter the bloodstream
, causing bacteremia and subsequent local infections. Although uncommo
n, bacteremia and localized infection with S. choleraesuis can cause s
ignificant morbidity. This is especially true among immunocompromised
patients, in whom Salmonella infection is more prevalent.
