We describe the evolution of self-focused light beams in arrays of non
linear waveguides taking into account the variation of the coupling st
rength across the array, The respective equation of motion is a partic
ular form of the Discrete Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation. Stable beams
correspond to spatial solitary waves which may move across the array
according to gradients of the coupling strength, The interplay of inho
mogeneous coupling and nonlinear localization allows for power-control
led beam steering. In the present paper we investigate the steering ef
fect using equations of motion for the beam parameters which are deriv
ed by means of a variational method. We compare the respective results
with those of fully numerical simulations.
