We address the problem of the realization of a magneto-optically coole
d atom cloud near a dielectric surface. The influence of the surface o
n the magneto-optical trap is analyzed via numerical simulation of the
trapping process. Experimental results show that a Cs magneto-optical
trap can operate as close as 50 mu m from the surface. Possible appli
cations of our scheme to study atom-surface interaction are discussed.
