Cm. Rodriguez et Sr. Boggs, BEHAVIORAL UPSET IN MEDICAL PATIENTS - REVISED - EVALUATION OF A PARENT REPORT MEASURE OF DISTRESS FOR PEDIATRIC POPULATIONS, Journal of pediatric psychology, 19(3), 1994, pp. 319-324
Examined the utility of a new parent-report measure designed specifica
lly for pediatric inpatients, the Behavioral Upset in Medical Patients
-Revised (BUMP-R). The BUMP-R was administered to 151 mothers of hospi
talized children ages 4-12 years the day following the child's hospita
l admission. The BUMP-R demonstrated good internal consistency and a f
actor analysis revealed four factors identified as negativity/agitatio
n, amiability, dysphoria, and noncompliance. Children exhibiting behav
ioral distress at home were more likely to experience adjustment probl
ems upon hospitalization. Demographic and illness-related variables we
re not substantial risk factors for hospital adjustment difficulties.
