Thermochemical calculations were carried out for the self-propagating
high temperature synthesis (SHS) of MoSi2-WSi2 alloys. Adiabatic tempe
ratures and amounts of liquid phase of MoSi2 and WSi2 formed were calc
ulated at various initial temperatures for the reactions forming MoSi2
, WSi2 and their alloys. These alloys were prepared using elemental po
wders of Mo, W and Si by the thermal explosion mode of SHS. The produc
ts were characterized by X-rav diffraction and scanning electron micro
scopy. The morphologies of the alloys are explained with the help of t
he thermomechanical calculations.
