Photoreduction of MoO3/SiO2 catalysts in CO followed by chemisorption
of cyclopropane results in highly active catalysts for the metathesis
of alkenes. These catalysts gradually lose their activity due to an in
trinsic deactivation mechanism. Experimental results have shown that t
he deactivation is due to the isomerization of the Mo-cyclobutane inte
rmediate into pi-complexes of the alkenes with the Mo4+ ions.
