Estimates of toroidal current driven by helicon waves are presented. I
t is shown that a net current may be driven even if no wave momentum i
s dissipated. Furthermore, because the magnetostatic field has a poloi
dal component, ponderomotive forces that act in the poloidal direction
may also drive toroidal current. Toroidal current driven by poloidal
ponderomotive forces arises even with toroidally symmetric wave launch
ing, when the current driven by the toroidal momentum dissipation is c
ancelled.
