A 2.5-year-old spayed female dog was evaluated for ptyalism, inability
to swallow, and persistent extensor rigidity. A clinical diagnosis of
tetanus was made. Seemingly, the source of the infection was a remnan
t of the uterine body left after ovariohysterectomy. Surgical removal
of the uterine stump and appropriate medical therapy for tetanus resol
ved the clinical signs.
