Abstract
Structure of ultrafine gold particles embedded in silica glass has bee n studied by the x-ray diffraction method. It is found that the gold p articles have an effective temperature factor of 1.84 angstrom-2 and i nclude a few layers of plane faults. It is deduced that the gold parti cles in silica glass are highly defective owing to the mismatch of the thermal expansion coefficient.
