Recreation and tourism are increasingly seen as important economic act
ivities by many Pacific Basin and Asian countries wishing to enhance t
heir economies. However, tourism and recreation development often nega
tively impact on the quality of life of local residents. Consequently,
there continues to be a need to measure accurately the perceived impa
cts of tourism in order to help mitigate the negative consequences of
development. This paper reports the results of a study in the newly es
tablished Penghu National Scenic Area in the Republic of China (Taiwan
). Data were collected using a standardized tourism impact attitude sc
ale which was translated from English to Chinese. The findings suggest
that the heavily populated. area of Makung is more supportive of tour
ism and recreation development.
