A new phase (the ''chi phase'') has been found in Al-Ni-Ti alloys prod
uced by mechanical alloying and hot pressing. The structure of this ne
w phase is similar to that of the NiTi2 compound (f.c.c., E9(3)) but w
ith a lattice parameter of about 1.14-1.15 nm. A variety of additional
experiments with alloys produced by arc melting and rapid quenching i
ndicate that oxygen contamination (0.5-1.0 wt.%) is responsible for th
e occurrence of the new phase. Some suggestions are made regarding the
atomic arrangement in the lattice of the chi phase.
