We have studied the effect of the milling energy and atmosphere on the
crystalline-amorphous phase transition induced by ball milling of Si
and Ge powders. It was found that the amorphization process is caused
by grain refinement. A strict correlation between the milling energy a
nd amount of amorphous phase obtained was determined. The effect of ox
ygen on the amorphization process was investigated. No correlation was
found between the level of oxygen contamination and the formation of
the amorphous phase. The effect of oxygen on the thermal properties of
the amorphous phases was studied.
