P. Schumacher et Al. Greer, ENHANCED HETEROGENEOUS NUCLEATION OF ALPHA-AL IN AMORPHOUS ALUMINUM-ALLOYS, Materials science & engineering. A, Structural materials: properties, microstructure and processing, 182, 1994, pp. 1335-1339
The low atomic mobility in metallic glasses such as amorphous aluminiu
m alloys permits the isothermal study of heterogeneous nucleation. The
action of conventional grain-refining additions containing Al3Ti and
TiB2 has been investigated microscopically in a devitrification study
of Al85Y8Ni5Co2. Particles of TiB2 with a thin coating of Al3Ti are th
e nucleating agent; copious nucleation of alpha-Al occurs on the (001)
faces of these particles.
