Hw. Jannasch, BIOCATALYTIC TRANSFORMATIONS OF HYDROTHERMAL FLUIDS, Philosophical transactions-Royal Society of London. Physical sciences and engineering, 355(1723), 1997, pp. 475-486
The occurrence of copious animal populations at deep-sea vents indicat
es an effective microbial chemosynthetic biocatalysis of hydrothermal
fluids on their emission into oxygenated ambient seawater. The large m
etabolic and physiological diversity of microbes found at these sites,
including anaerobic and aerobic hyperthermophiles, reflects an even h
igher variety of biocatalytic or enzymatic reactions that greatly infl
uence deep-sea hydrothermal geochemistry.
