Phytochemical studies on Cassia italica have resulted in the isolation
of beta-sitosterol, stigmasterol, alpha-amyrin, 1,5-dihydroxy-3-methy
l anthraquinone and a new anthraquinone, the structure of which was as
signed on the basis of spectral studies. The new compound is shown to
possess antimicrobial and antitumour activity.
