Abstract
The rapid identification of Staphylococcus aureus in bronchoalveolar l avage (BAL) fluid is a major goal in the microbiological laboratory. A study was performed to evaluate the ACCUPROBE(R) kit (Gen-Probe, San- Diego, CA) with 164 BAL samples. We obtained 96.3% of agreement betwee n cultures (29 positive S. aureus cultures) and the test probe. Most o f the discordant results (6 BAL) were explained after analysing other bacteriological results and clinical data.
