Abstract
Theoretical studies on the Staudinger reaction between methoxyketene a nd a simple imidate provide an explanation for the trans stereoselecti vity observed. The key step responsible for this unusual outcome is th e facile interconversion between two zwitterionic intermediates throug h a biradical transition state.
