Abstract
The value or informativeness of an item in a library collection or dat abase has been measured by its frequency of circulation or access. Thi s paper presents a more discriminating measure, user contact time, and develops a model for its distribution over users and over time. The m odel is applied to the problem of predicting future informativeness of an item.
