Biological monitoring of human exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydroca
rbons, which is based on analytical determination of polycyclic aromat
ic hydrocarbons metabolites in urine, has been reviewed. The most suit
able biomarker for occupational and environmental exposure to polycycl
ic aromatic hydrocarbons is 1-hydroxypyrene.
