A spectroscopic investigation and Judd-Ofelt analysis of Nd3+ doped Ca
Zn2y2Ge3O12 (CAZGAR) has been performed. The broader absorption near 8
05 nm, longer fluorescence lifetime of 285 mus and the larger branchin
g ratio of 40% for the F-4(3/2) to I-4(9/2) manifold are improvements
over Nd3+:YAG as a 941 nm laser material. The effects of color centers
induced by ultraviolet irradiation of CAZGAR are also discussed.
