Emission and excitation spectra of a Ni-doped forsterite crystal have
been measured at temperatures down to 15 K. Three emission bands are e
vident, the most intense having a zero-phonon line at 1374 nm (7280 cm
-1) and a lifetime of 1.2 (+/-0.1) ms at 20 K. Evidence suggests that
Ni2+ substitutes in the centrosymmetric M1 site.
