Abstract
The effect on Nd3+ Stark levels of substituting Gd for Y in YLiF4, KLi YF5, and YVO4 laser crystals is slight, as demonstrated in our spectra and in our best-fit crystal-field parameters. Gd-based crystals maint ain the spectral properties of Y-based crystals while allowing for lar ger Nd concentrations.
