Using excitation spectroscopy, we have observed dilution line narrowin
g in an Eu3+ activated pure silica glass. Spectra have been obtained a
t several locations in the inhomogeneous broadened line. The amount of
structure obtained in the excitation signal is qualitatively consiste
nt with the expected Gaussian site distribution. An estimate of the nu
mber of ions producing a given spectra is obtained by comparing the ob
served line shape with a statistically derived simulated spectrum.
