Photoluminescence and electroluminescence in new PPV-based copolymers
and in their low molar mass model analogs were studied. The separation
of the chromophoric units in the copolymer chain by inert aliphatic s
pacers ca. 4-12 angstrom in length did not significantly effect the lu
minescence behavior. Light emission is due to the radiative deactivati
on of singlet excitations located at the chromophoric units generated
either by light or formed as a result of the recombination of charge c
arriers injected from the adjacent electrodes.
