The luminescence of potassium rare earth orthophosphates, K3RE(PO4)2,
RE = La, Ce, Tb, was studied at 298 and 10 K under UV and VUV excitati
on. The band gaps determined by reflection and excitation spectra were
found in the range 7.2-7.8 eV. The results are discussed. The observe
d narrow excitation band at the VUV absorption edge is caused by an ex
citation of PO43- anion molecules in the hosts.
