Abstract
Energy levels have been calculated for several cerium centers in alkal ine earth halides. Here we focus on the CeF(nnn) center in BaF2. Using the calculated levels it is explained that free electron and hole cap ture at the stable Ce3+F(nnn) center is not an efficient way of exciti ng this center.
