An. Trukhin, SELF-TRAPPED EXCITON LUMINESCENCE IN ALPHA-QUARTZ, Nuclear instruments & methods in physics research. Section B, Beam interactions with materials and atoms, 91(1-4), 1994, pp. 334-337
It is shown that two differently oriented (perpendicular and parallel
to the c axis) self-trapped excitons (STE(perpendicular-to) and STE(pa
rallel-to)) can be created in the range of the Urbach tail of the fund
amental absorption of a-quartz. Below this tail no STE luminescence wa
s found. The alkali ion centers, excited below the tail, give luminesc
ence bands, which can be replaced by substituting alkali ions with Cu ions. It is concluded that both STE(parallel-to) and STE(perpendicula
r-to) are intrinsic.
