The effects of charged-particle irradiation on the formation of defect
s in CaCO3 have been studied using electron spin resonance (ESR). An o
rthorhombic CO2- was dominant in powdered synthetic aragonite irradiat
ed by 1.6 MeV He+, while both orthorhombic and isotropic CO2- were obs
erved in gamma-irradiated aragonite powder. G-values (number of defect
s per 100 eV) for alpha- and gamma-rays were obtained to be G(alpha) =
0.0041 and G(gamma) = 0.27 for aragonite leading to a k-value (alpha-
ray efficiency) of 0.015.
