H. Schmidt et A. Schramm, CONCLUSIVE EVIDENCE SUPPLIED BY AND RANKI NG OF IMAGING DIAGNOSTICS AND DUPLEX SONOGRAPHY IN NEWBORN SUFFERING FROM NECROTIZING ENTEROCOLITIS, RoFo. Fortschritte auf dem Gebiete der Rontgenstrahlen und der neuenbildgebenden Verfahren, 160(6), 1994, pp. 524-530
In this prospective study 101 sonographic examinations of superior mes
enteric artery blood flow velocities, indices and blood flow volume we
re consecutively performed in 41 newborn to diagnose necrotising enter
ocolitis (NEC). Intramural and portal venous gas was also estimated. T
he artifacts of air in the AMS and the portal system were examinated i
n an experimental study. The results of sonography and abdominal radio
graphy were equivalent in the case of definitely established NEC, port
al venous gas being more sensitive to detection by sonography Abdomina
l radiography was indicated as the primary examination in case of a cl
early identified clinical course. Sonography should be performed so th
at fewer radiographs will be required in the following course of disea
se.
