M. Hrebickova et al., LEXICAL APPROACH TO PERSONALITY .2. 5-FAC TOR STRUCTURE OF THE PERSONALITY DESCRIPTION BASED ON THE LEXICON ANALYSIS, Ceskoslovenska psychologie, 37(6), 1993, pp. 491-500
In their study, the authors are concerned with the structural approach
to personality resulting from the analysis of the lexicon. Natural la
nguage serves as a starting-point of the research within this approach
. The structure of the personality description in the language is repr
esented by 5 factors (Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness,
Emotional Stability, Culture or Openess to Experience or Intellect), g
enerally indicated as the Big Five. In spite of certain differences, t
he majority of authors agree what concerns the interpretation of indiv
idual factors. Sporadic attempts at collecting personality relevant co
ncepts have been overcome by Cattell who - as the first one - was able
to catch the structure of the personality description. Cattell's inve
stigation was re-analysed by Fiske, Tupes, Christal, Normal. Digman, a
nd Takemoto-Chock. Investigations with adjectives selected independent
ly of Cattell's set of variables were carried out in the English langu
age by Norman, Goldberg and Peabody, McCrae and Costa; with partial di
fferences, they rejoined the five-factor structure. In the conclusion,
the authors mention numerous attempts aimed at the verification of th
e Big Five in different continuities. This will be dealt with in the n
ext article.
