Acanthamoeba castellanii was cultured on collagen shields and observed
by scanning electron microscopy. The study revealed the presence of a
cup-like depression, termed an amebostome, on the surface of the orga
nism that aids in phagocytosis of cell material. Similar structures we
re found using transmission electron microscopy on the trophozoites fr
om human corneal shields cultured in vitro.
