Sm. Panton et al., FUNDAMENTAL DEFORMATION TYPES AND SECTIONAL PROPERTIES IN ROLL FORMING, International journal of mechanical sciences, 36(8), 1994, pp. 725-735
Roll forming of sheet metal is considered in terms of four fundamental
types of deformation: longitudinal stretching, longitudinal bending.
transverse bending and shear. Strain and work expressions are develope
d for each deformation type. Three of the deformation types are associ
ated with simple sectional properties and from these it is possible to
predict their relative magnitudes. It is shown that shear strain is p
otentially far larger than the other deformation types. Some of the im
plications for practical roll design are discussed.
