Abstract
The synthesis of 3-alkenyl cephalosporins 5 using an epoxide mediated Wittig reaction is described. Reduction of the 3'-triphenylphosphonium cephalosporin-1-oxide 4 followed by condensation with acetaldehyde in the presence of 1,2-epoxybutane gave, after purification, the 3-propy lidene derivative 5 (R1=CH3) in 39% yield.
