Ninety-four library/information science educators in Africa were surve
yed through a questionnaire in order to ascertain their characteristic
s with respect to their qualifications, teaching and library work expe
rience, nationality, and the journals they consulted frequently. The f
indings reveal that library/information science educators in Africa ar
e highly qualified, as 87% of the respondents had master's degrees or
higher in librarianship. A sizable number of the respondents (62%) hav
e degrees in other disciplines in addition to library and information
science qualifications. A majority of the respondents had worked in th
e field before taking up teaching appointments. Only 14% of the respon
dents were expatriates. The study concludes that library/information s
cience educators in Africa can be favorably compared with their counte
rparts elsewhere.
