The protonation of 9-phenylanthracene by decay and radiolytic techniqu
es was carried out in the gaseous phase. The intermediate, a free ion
formed with an excess of vibrational energy, underwent fragmentation,
intermolecular and intramolecular condensation reactions. The yields o
f the products are dependent on the protonation exothermicity, whose i
ncrease favours the fragmentation process. The self-condensation react
ion leads to the formation of 2,3-benzofluoranthene.
