Abstract
A relation for solvent anisotropy shifts, delta(a), which is valid in oriented as well as nonoriented systems is derived and confirmed by ex periment. For oriented solutes, the dominant contribution is found to stem from the solvent isotropic susceptibility but not its anisotropy. The errors induced by neglecting delta(a) in a determination of chemi cal-shift anisotropies using oriented molecules are predicted for vari ous nuclei. (C) 1994 Academic Press, Inc.
