This paper examines the determination of the T-stress by making use of
a secondary state and the complex-variable forms of the work reciproc
al and Rice's J(x) integrals in terms of the Muskhelishvili complex st
ress functions. A simple relationship is found which relates the stres
s intensity factors and T-stresses of the two states and is applied to
the problem of a crack at the root of a notch.
