Abstract
The controllable, additional stratification of the F2 ionospheric laye r resulting from the propagation of a powerful wave beam is establishe d. The formulae showing the properties of a diagnostic beam injected i n the same direction as the powerful beam, but shifted in frequency, a re derived as a function of the powerful beam intensity and of the fre quency shift. The theoretical results are completed with numerical est imations.
