W. Vanschaik et al., LUMINESCENCE AND HIGH-RESOLUTION TRANSMISSION ELECTRON-MICROSCOPY STUDY OF CR3-DOPED LAPO4 AND LAMGB5O10(), Chemistry of materials, 6(6), 1994, pp. 755-760
The luminescence properties of the compounds LaPO4:Cr and LaMgB5O10:Cr
at 4.2 K are reported. Furthermore, the morphology of these compounds
has been studied with a high-resolution transmission electron microsc
ope (HRTEM). The Cr3+ ion shows a Stokes-shifted broad-band emission i
n the near-infrared region which is attributed to the 4T2 --> 4A2 tran
sition. In the excited state of Cr3+ a large relaxation takes place. T
he luminescence characteristics are typical for Cr3+ in a glass. It is
concluded that the Cr3+ ion is not built-in into either LaPO4 or LaMg
B5O10 but is present in an amorphous surface layer. The amorphous seco
nd phase is observed in HRTEM images.
