J. Nylund et al., CHARACTER AND STABILITY OF COLLOIDAL SUBSTANCES IN A MECHANICAL PULP SUSPENSION, Colloids and surfaces. A, Physicochemical and engineering aspects, 85(1), 1994, pp. 81-87
Dispersed colloidal substances present in aqueous suspensions of unble
ached thermomechanical pulp were studied by transmission electron micr
oscopy and by flocculation experiments. The colloidal substances were
primarily lipophilic extractive droplets and colloidal fiber fragments
. When larger colloidal fiber fragments were removed by ultracentrifug
ation the stability of the lipophilic droplets against flocculation an
d sedimentation with cationic polyelectrolytes was enhanced.
