M. Waber et al., EFFECT RELATED OZONE MONITORING - COMPARISON OF REACTION INDICATOR TOBACCO BEL-W3 AND DEPOSITION COLLECTOR INDIGO PAPER, Chemosphere, 28(11), 1994, pp. 1905-1912
Bioindicators (tobacco ssp. BEL W3) and, for comparison, abiotic depos
ition collectors based on the indigo paper method were exposed for ozo
ne monitoring at various locations with different traffic situations i
n Munich. The exposure schedule was 10 periods of 14 days each from Ma
y to October 1992. At one station in the centre of the city the result
s were related to the data of a continous ozone analyser of a monitori
ng-station of the Bavarian State Office for Environmental Protection (
LfU). The correlation of ozone doses computed from the contiuous ozone
measurements and corresponding extinctions of istatin solutions from
the indigo papers (unbuffered variants) revealed a linear relationship
with a correlation coefficient of r=0,98. Data correlation between to
bacco damages and istatin formation in these indigo papers due to the
ozone exposure revealed a correlation coefficient of r=0,92. This corr
elation shows low increase of tobacco damage at the low ozone dose ran
ge and, in comparison, an exponential increase at high indigo values.
