Abstract
Sugar accumulation was examined in three species of lichen mycobionts
cultured on osmotic media. Large quantities of glucose, fructose, mann
itol, and arabitol were detected in all mycobionts cultured on media w
ith high concentrations of sucrose. However fructose was not detected
in mycobionts grown on media with glucose instead of sucrose. The quan
tities of accumulated monosaccharides in mycobionts increased parallel
to the quantity of sugar added to the medium, though there were no di
fferences in concentrations of polyols among mycobionts grown on media
with various quantities of sucrose.
