A new approach to the Iosipescu in-plane shear test is presented. By u
sing the principle of virtual work, a formula is derived that links th
e in-plane shear modulus to the global applied load, geometric paramet
ers and a contour integral of a function of the longitudinal and trans
verse displacements. Numerical simulations based on finite element cal
culations are performed in order to validate the process. The results
in terms of shear moduli are better than 1 % for different composite m
aterials and coupon geometries. A numerical error simulation perturbin
g the displacement values demonstrates the stability and therefore the
viability of the method.
