Ultrasonic speed, isentropic compressibility, dielectric constant, ref
ractive index and viscosity data of binary mixtures of quinoline with
benzene, toluene, o-xylene or p-xylene have been experimentally obtain
ed over the whole composition range at 303.15 K and the interactions e
xisting between the components have been discussed. These studies sugg
est the existence of strong specific interaction between quinoline and
aromatic hydrocarbons and more than one competing factors are respons
ible for the observed excess values of these properties. Molar polariz
abilities, apparent polarizabilities, equilibrium constants, apparent
dipole moments and Kirkwood correlation parameters for these mixtures
have also been evaluated and the results indicate complexation between
the molecules of quinoline and aromatic hydrocarbons. Various interac
tion parameters and excess Gibbs energy of flow have been evaluated fr
om the viscosity data.
