Abstract
A simple spectrophotometric method has been developed based on the oxi dation of primary and secondary monohydric alcohols by the K2CrO4-HNO3 system, optimising K2CrO4 and HNO3 concentrations at 1.3 x 10(-2) and 3.7 mol dm-3 respectively and analysing the product Cr(III) at 580 nm . The data obtained confirm that K2CrO4-HNO3 system oxidises all prima ry alcohols employed to the respective fatty acids while a secondary a lcohol is oxidised to a ketone.
