Abstract
Capillary electrophoresis techniques offer high plate numbers and are highly suited for the efficient separation of a wide variety of chemic al components in diverse matrices. Because of the small capillary and detection cell dimensions, together with the minute volumes of samples to be injected, sensitive detection devices based on different physic ochemical principles are being developed by various scientific groups and companies. The nature, possible applications and limitations of ch emiluminescence as a detection technique are outlined in the present m anuscript. The technique so far has only been explored by a limited nu mber of research groups, and serious developments are to be expected f or the coming years.
